Founded in 1956 the VILF today represents more than 800 employees of the German paint and coatings industry, raw material suppliers, universities and institutes. In the early days the members were graduated engineers from the main German paint schools, who were not represented by the relatively restricted German Chemists association. Still today the most members are paint engineers, but also many chemists, paint technicians and even commercial employees have joined the VILF. More than 70 companies support the association as company members.
In accordance to the statutes the main goal is to improve the technical knowledge of the members by various measures.
Main event is the two day annual conference held in October/November in Neu-Isenburg, close to Frankfurt. Lectures and contributions provided by the paint industry, organizations, universities and raw material suppliers present latest developments and findings. Every year about 300 members and non-members attend the conference.
Furthermore five regional groups invite to free-of-charge afternoon meetings with presentations and discussions on current paint related topics.
In 2009 the VILF became a member of the FATIPEC Federation.
